A heartwarming sight}

It has been a really long time since I last wrote on this blog.

Just this morning, as I board the SBS bus, 154, I witnessed a rather heartwarming scene. When I board the bus, the bus driver greeted me with a "Hello, Good morning". Although I was listening to my music on my ear piece, I could somehow hear someone talking to me. I was shocked for a moment as this is not what I could usually see when I board a bus. I turned around, not knowing what to do, and tried to smile to the bus driver as I said hello. I was not sure if the driver could see my expression or hear me (as I was listening to music), but it definitely made me feel better, like I had a good start this morning.

Later, at the next bus stop, when people alight, the uncle greeted them. He said "Thank you, have a nice day, see you again" . It continued with him greeting people who alighted and board the bus. I became curious seeing this sight. It made me wonder, what is the uncle's motivation for saying this every time he reaches a bus stop? Wouldn't he be tired and sick on it, seeing that not many people responded to his greeting?

Although my earpiece were stuck to my ears, I wasn't interested in the music that was playing, I was more looking forward to reaching each bus stop as I listened to the uncle greet people and seeing people's reaction towards his unique behaviour.

Some people when they heard him, they would give him a smile or reply him. Others just walk off and continue with their life, some were even listening to their music (like me) and probably didn't hear him and hence, just walk off. A thought occur to me, "This reaction of people isn't surprising at all". In our society these days, people rarely talk or even take a look at strangers. It is as if we are all living in our own world. Most of the time when I board a bus, I rarely see interaction between the bus driver and the passengers. Perhaps everyone is tired, hence when I board the bus, I noticed that the bus driver had a rather tired or expressionless face while the passengers just ignore the bus drivers, tap their card and try to find themselves a seat on the bus.

Sometimes, it would also be due to the fact that some of the people are shy and hence, they do not take the initiative to greet others. Some people might also think " I do not even talk to my neighbours or relatives nowadays, why should I even greet a bus driver whom I have just seen for the first time". To me, this kind of thought isn't surprising at all. In our world today, we are no longer behaving like 40 years ago, where people in one village share everything they have together and just a friendly chat together. People nowadays are busy, busy rushing for work or school, busy making money, busy doing everything. Time is money. There is little time to care about other things. But what if there is indeed time? There is a time for everything. A simple greeting or gesture does not take up much time. It just merely require the courage and initiative to start doing it and everyone will follow. The bus driver uncle who I met today is a good example. Although it may be tough at the first few tries, perverse on and you might get something u didn't expect.  Just like what I have seen, after a few greetings whereby some people just nod and alight, I saw one girl who replied the uncle " Thank you uncle!" I think this made both the girl and the uncle feel good.

Therefore, remember that a simple greeting will make both everyone' day feel good. Start greeting people and make everyone feel good. You will feel good yourself too!
